ADÉLIE

ANIMATED BRUSHSTROKES

This animation of the Adelie penguin of Antarctica combined painting, digital media and animation.

First, I created the drawing using India ink with a cotton swab, marker, nib, and brush. The scene shows the penguin walking under oval clouds and among rocks, Antarctic mosses, and greater burnet flowers.

Then, I came across a documentary where I saw Adélie birds in motion, which inspired me to create the frame-by-frame animation in Adobe Fresco. Using real ink stains, I designed digital brushes that emulated the gestures and textures of ink and paper. Finally, I applied rotoscoping to a cycle of the bird's walk to create the looping animation.
