INK + MOTION

ADÉLIE

ANIMATED BRUSHSTROKES

This illustration of the Antarctic Adélie penguin was a project that constantly went off on a tangent. First, it was my return to Chinese ink using a cotton swab, marker, nib, and brush. While searching for references, I came across a documentary where I saw the Adélie penguins in motion, which motivated me to learn frame by frame animation using Adobe Fresco. I also had to design digital brushes that emulated the gestures and texture of ink and paper, which was a lengthy experimentation. Finally, I discovered the basic principles of rotoscoping using the bird's walk cycle, which consisted of 22 frames mirrored to create my first looping animation. The final scene shows the penguin walking under oval clouds and among rocks, Antarctic mosses, and great burnet flowers.
